At Least 15 Killed as Unrest Spreads Ahead of Kashmir Assembly Vote
Violence erupting out of the clash between the security personnel and protesters in Pakistan-administered Kashmir has resulted in at least 15 deaths (11 civilians and four security officials) and more than 50 injuries. The dispute has been triggered over the upcoming July 27 elections for the local assemblies, during which the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) called for scrapping of 12 legislative constituencies designated for the displaced Kashmiris who live away from the region, contending that this is an effort to undermine the representation of the locals. The authorities, meanwhile, imposed a ban on the organization under the anti-terrorist laws, conducted heavy surveillance on the area and stopped a huge protest march of more than 10,000 people heading towards Muzaffarabad.
